Unfiltered is an independent, grassroots platform focusing on features, analysis, and longform investigations. We dig into underreported stories to convey to local and international audiences who want to better understand the real side of Japan.
Our members reflect Japan’s emerging diversity, and that allows us to amplify forgotten voices both in and outside of Japan but also to report on on Japan’s role in the world.
Our Beliefs
- Our cooperative model provides space for authentic journalism that challenges threats from censorship, centralization and declining press freedom faced by Japan’s media.
- We are committed to empowering, independent, uncompromising, quality journalism.
- We work with media organizations and civil society around the world to protect and advance freedom of expression, democracy, and egalitarian values in solidarity.
Who Owns Us
Unfiltered is a cooperative of journalist and reader members, where they make editorial, organizational, and financial decisions democratically. We don’t accept sponsorships or advertising from any outside entity, and no one can buy us.
All rights to any content we produce are owned by our members or contributing writers and journalists.
A cooperative is, as defined by the International Cooperative Alliance, is, “a people-centered enterprise that is owned, managed, and operated by its members to achieve their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations.”
How you can get Involved
The fate of Unfiltered depends on the capacities, values, ideas, objectives of members and supporters.
Our content is published for free, and accessible to anyone anywhere. That’s why, we do need support in order to enable our journalists to continue to publish stories.
